Cecil Strawn is an important first generation studio potter of the American movement. Strawn studied with Peter Voulkos and Maija Grotell and held a master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin. Strawn was an associate professor of art at Northern Illinois University in De Kalb and also taught ceramics, crafts, photography, design, physical education, and coach of football and baseball at Helix high school, La Mesa, Calif. He Studied at Cranbrook and had a residency at Archie Bray. He exhibited nationally and won the purchase award for his ceramics at the 1953 Annual Exhibition of the Springfield (Mo.) Art Museum. In 1954 he exhibited with the Madison Art Association Craft Exhibition at Frautschi’s, Inc. gallery.
